Student Experience

The student learning experience is a hands-on experience with SFHS patients, coworkers, equipment and/or data. This experience requires you to be enrolled in an educational program.

Shadow Experience

Thank you for your interest in a shadowing experience at Saint Francis Healthcare System. To be considered for a SFHS shadow experience, all requirements must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the requested shadow start date.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Participant is at least 16 years of age.
  • Participant will only observe without any hands-on interaction with a patient, medical equipment, medical records, computers, and will not enter an area of contamination such as isolation rooms, soiled linen areas, etc.

Before You Apply

  • Choose a SFHS colleague to shadow (no family members). If you need assistance, make note of that on your application and we will be happy to assist.
  • Know what dates or timeframe you would like to shadow.
  • Note: the application will expire 30 days after application is submitted or by the requested shadow start date if all required documents are not received by SFHS.

Student Experience

Thank you for your interest in a student experience at Saint Francis Healthcare System. To be considered for a SFHS student experience, all requirements must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the requested start date.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Participants must be at least 18 (any exceptions are outlined in the Academic Affiliation Agreement with specific schools/programs).
  • Students requesting learning experience must be enrolled in a program with an Academic Affiliation Agreement on file between SFHS and the named school program.
  • Students must be in good academic standing at the time of application and learning experience.

Before You Apply

  • Find a SFHS colleague you wish to be your preceptor (preceptors may not be a family member by any blood or marriage relation). If you are not able to secure a preceptor, we will assist in coordinating one for you. Tips for finding a preceptor:
    • Ask Around: Family, friends, neighbors or acquaintances might know someone in your field.
    • Use References: If referred, ask to use them as a reference.
    • Network: Healthcare practitioners often know others in the field. Ask physicians or other professionals for referrals.
    • Search Online: Use sfmc.net to find providers by location and specialty.
  • If you are participating in a quality improvement project, you will need to immediately contact StudentTraining@sfmc.net attention QI, EBP Project for requirements and further information. Please note human research projects are strictly prohibited throughout the SFHS organization.
