With the region’s first Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Saint Francis Medical Center is fully prepared to care for premature and critically ill newborns throughout the region. Saint Francis is the southeast Missouri area’s only Level III NICU with three board-certified, fellowship-trained neonatologists who have more than 50 years of combined experience.
What is a Neonatologist?
Neonatology is a sub-specialty of pediatrics that requires an additional three years of fellowship training in newborn intensive care. Neonatologists have the special training required to evaluate and treat medical problems in newborns and babies still in the womb; for example, a neonatologist will assist if a newborn is premature or has a serious illness, injury, or birth defect, or if a problem is identified before a baby is born.
