What is an Intensivist?
Intensivists are doctors who focus on care of critically ill patients, usually in an intensive care unit (ICU). These critical care physicians have advanced training in treating this type of patient. At Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, this team of physicians provide 24-hour coverage, seven days a week.
The Intensivist’s Job
Saint Francis Medical Center has four critical care units, located throughout the facility. These include the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Our team of highly-trained intensivists specialize in the care of patients whose conditions are life-threatening and who require comprehensive care and constant monitoring. They work closely with surgeons, emergency medicine specialists, pulmonary medicine physicians, hospitalists and support staff to oversee and manage all ICU patients.
Intensivists at Saint Francis Medical Center can lead to shorter lengths of stay in the critical care units.
