The Critical Care Center in Cape Girardeau
The Critical Care Center at Saint Francis Medical Center is a state-of-the-art unit equipped with the latest medical technology and is staffed by highly trained medical professionals who specialize in caring for critically ill patients. The Critical Care Center houses three intensive care units:
- 10-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
- 10-bed Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)
- 10-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
Patients are often transported to the Critical Care Center via air or ground from other hospitals throughout the five-state region.
Critical Care Nursing
Nurses in the ICU receive up to 12+ weeks of orientation and have additional training and credentials, such as:
- Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ALCS)
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLCS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) and Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS)
Because patients are admitted to the ICU at Saint Francis with a wide range of illnesses and by a variety of physician specialists, the nursing staff is well-rounded and able to care for patients with many different diagnoses.
Family Services
To ensure the best Medical Center stay possible, the Critical Care Center offers a variety of patient and family services:
- Flexible visiting hours to ensure optimal patient care *
- Telephones, restrooms and shower facilities for families
- Overnight family accommodations/waiting room
- Chapel and pastoral care
- Counseling and social services for financial concerns and community resources
- Crisis counseling
* Visiting hours at the Critical Care Center vary and are different than the visiting hours for the Medical Center. Please check with the Critical Care nursing staff for specific information.
The Family Room is centrally located on the main floor of the Medical Center, with convenient access to the ICU on the same floor. The Medical Center’s chapel and a vending area with 24-hour food access also are nearby. The Family Room features:
- Limited sleeping provisions for family members who prefer to stay overnight
- Three private restrooms and a shower
- New furnishings with tile floors
- Coffee service
- Large windows that welcome the abundant natural light
- Computers with Internet access
- Flat-screen TV
- Personal lockers
